Main News: Ethereum Outperforms Bitcoin in Q3
Bitcoin also had a strong quarter, gaining approximately 42.8%, its second-best third quarter on record. Bitcoin moved from $58,566.09 on July 1 to $83,640.10 at quarter close, with its own quarterly high of $86,596.74 reached on September 22, the same day Ethereum hit its high.
Both assets gave back a similar share of their respective highs by quarter end, pointing to a shared market-wide dynamic at the top of the quarter rather than an Ethereum-specific pullback.
What Drove Ethereum's Quarter
Three factors contributed to Ethereum's gain during Q3 2026:
Spot Ethereum ETF inflows: between $10 billion and nearly $14 billion over the quarter, concentrated mainly in August
Corporate treasury purchases: companies added Ethereum holdings worth more than $15 billion to their balance sheets
DeFi total value locked (TVL): grew to approximately $88 billion across Ethereum and its Layer-2 networks
TVL measures the total funds deposited into DeFi applications. It reflects usage rather than profit, and also rises when the value of deposited assets increases.
Ethereum's starting point for the quarter was further below its own all-time high (from August 2025) than Bitcoin was from its own record, which meant similar-sized inflows moved Ethereum's price by a larger percentage.
Ethereum vs Bitcoin: Volatility Comparison
The spread between each asset's quarterly low and high points to a wider swing for Ethereum:
Ethereum low-to-high ratio for the quarter: 1.77
Bitcoin low-to-high ratio for the quarter: 1.48
This means Ethereum moved through a wider price range than Bitcoin during Q3, both on the way up and during pullbacks within the quarter.
Macro Context: September 30 Inflation Data
On September 30, 2026, the US Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index for August came in at 3.0% year-on-year, below the expected 3.3%. Bitcoin moved toward the $84,750 area following the release.
